On the Set of Nashville: Deacon's Upcoming Duet with His Daughter Is a "Major Step Forward"

How will Nashville's Deacon Claybourne bond with the daughter he just found out he had? Through music, naturally. At the end of the show's first season, Deacon (Charles Esten) learned that Rayna's daughter Maddie (Lennon Stella) was actually his biological child. The information sent Deacon to the bottle and a downward spiral that caused a near-fatal car wreck with Rayna (Connie Britton) and landed him in jail. Since the , Deacon has shied away from getting close to Maddie, but the two will finally get their defining moment during a duet in an upcoming episode.

Nashville's Connie Britton: Rayna and Deacon will be thrown together a lot

"The music is such a great way to bond, and you see it through all the different characters on the show that the music takes whatever relationship you have to another place and another level because you can say things behind a guitar that maybe you can't say without it," Esten told TVGuide.com during our recent visit to the Music City set. "This is a major step forward for the two of us to be standing there while she plays the guitar and voices in harmony. It's just a father and daughter and it takes us a long way. So, there's no discounting how much it means to do that music together."

While that relationship is moving more slowly, Deacon is going full steam ahead with the new woman in his life, Megan (Christina Chang). And from the sounds of it, she's not going anywhere anytime soon.

"I don't know what it is that she finds in Deacon, but I know what it is that he finds in Megan.   .. She's very clear eyed," Esten said. "She offered him a new way to look at himself during that tough time when he was at his lowest, and she looked at him and said, 'You don't need to beat yourself up over this.' That was a real lifeline in that moment."
