MTV has renewed horror series Scream for a third season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The pickup comes days before the premiere of a Scream Halloween special, which airs Oct. 18. The third season will be six episodes, down from 12 in Season 2.

In addition, showrunners Michael Gans and Richard Register will not return for Season 3. A replacement has not been announced. Gans and Register themselves took over from Season 1 showrunners Jill Blotevogel and Jaime Paglia.

Additional information about Season 3, including casting and setting, will be released at a later date. The Halloween special will move the show's setting to a new location. It's possible the show will be changing to an anthology format after following the same story for the first two seasons, but that's still unconfirmed.

Scream is based on the film franchise directed by the late horror maestro Wes Craven.
