Univision Cancels Miss USA Because of Trump's Remarks About Mexicans

Donald Trump has had a tough time of it since announcing he was running for president. The real estate mogul had to pay people to be there to hear his speech about "making America great again" on June 16.

And now, one of his business tentpoles has taken a blow: Univision announced it would not air the Miss USA pageant due to the "insulting remarks" Trump had made about Mexicans in his speech, according to the LA Times.

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best .... They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us," Trump said during his presidential announcement. "They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists."

As an afterthought, he mentioned, "And some, I assume, are good people."

Somehow, Mexican people were offended by these comments. Univision announced on Thursday that the network was dropping the pageant, of which Donald Trump is partial owner. It was originally scheduled to air on July 12.

"At Univision, we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country," the company said in its statement, according to LA Times. "We will not be airing the Miss USA pageant on July 12 or working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization."

Donald Trump respectfully agreed that the free market had spoken and graciously announced he would find a new home for his beauty pageant. Kidding! He took to Facebook to say Univision was upset because of what he said about... trade deals?

"Univision wants to back out of signed Miss Universe contract because I exposed the terrible trade deals that the U.S. makes with Mexico. I love Mexico but not the unfair trade deals that the U.S. so stupidly makes with them. Really bad for U.S. jobs, only good for Mexico," he posted on Facebook Thursday.

He later removed that post (you can still see it here, but it's not on his wall) and made another one that read, "Mexican government doesn't want me talking about terrible border situation & horrible trade deals. Forcing Univision to get me to stop- no way!"

One of Trump's lawyers told the LA Times they would be seeking legal action to reinstate Miss USA's airing on Univision. Trump himself released a statement where he finally managed to trot out an "I have plenty of Mexican friends" line:

"I have many successful business relations with Mexican companies and employ, and am close friends with, many Mexican people. ... The disappointment I expressed relates to our incompetent politicians and their failed trade and immigration policies. ... They are taking our jobs, taking our money and at the same time killing us at the border with illegals from all over the world freely flowing into our country."

UPDATE: NBC, which also airs the Miss USA pageant, has released a statement distancing themselves from the billionaire: "Donald Trump's opinions do not represent those of NBC, and we do not agree with his positions on a number of issues, including his recent comments on immigration," the network said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
