Former The Shield actor Michael Jace was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for the 2014 murder of his wife April Jace in Los Angeles on Friday, the Associated Press reports.

Jace was convicted of second-degree murder on May 31. He shot his wife to death in May 2014 after she requested a divorce. The Jaces have two sons, who were 8 and 5 at the time of April's death. The older son witnessed the murder and testified against his father.

Members of April Jace's family reportedly wept as they spoke about the loss of their loved one before the sentence was announced. Michael Jace apologized, and he received the sentence prosecutors sought.
