Mayans M.C. Stars Tease Lincoln Potter's Ongoing 'Path of Destruction' in Season 2

'You can't anticipate how he's going to manipulate a situation'

With just one season under its belt, FX's biker drama Mayans M.C. has already successfully established itself as an important, timely show that exists almost entirely separate from its highly rated parent series, Sons of Anarchy -- save for a few fan-favorite characters who have found their way to Southern California, of course.

One such character is Ray McKinnon's Lincoln Potter, an unhinged but cunning assistant U.S. attorney who was one of Sons' greatest antagonists despite only appearing in a single season of the Kurt Sutter-created drama. That carried over to Mayans M.C. as well, as the federal prosecutor proved once again that he was unafraid to break the rules a bit to get what he wants.

And what he wants is to take down both the MC and cartel culture. He's been working at it for years now, and because of his position within the U.S. government, he is capable of inflicting a lot of damage on many of our beloved characters. His presence in SoCal has already caused a lot of trouble for EZ (JD Pardo) and his brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas), and that's likely going to continue in Season 2.

Everything We Know About Mayans M.C.Season 2 So Far

"He has an ability to just weave his way into the brotherhood, to get into your head, to manipulate and create problems and turn brother against brother. So that's what you're finding with Season 2," teased Pardo when TV Guide caught up with the Mayans cast at the Television Critics Association summer press tour earlier this month. "It's gonna be turned up a notch because Potter ... is doing his job, but this time it's personal. It's like he's really out for revenge."

"[Potter's] intent is all in the good, but he's just causing this path of destruction," added Cardenas.

Making matters worse is the fact that Potter appears to thrive in the chaos he creates. "I think he really gets a kick out of it," said Cardenas, who noted that even the men and women working with Potter have trouble understanding the psyche of their colleague.

But it's not just the Reyes brothers who have to deal with Potter. Cartel-boss-trying-to-go-legitimate Miguel Galindo (Danny Pino) is also wrapped up with Potter after signing a deal in Season 1. And based on what we've seen in the trailer for Season 2, it seems Potter's plan to use Galindo to get to the rebel leader Adelita (Carla Baratta) is moving forward, with complicated consequences for everyone.

"He's kind of the free radical. You never quite know what he's going to do," teased Pino of what's to come when the show returns next month. "You can't anticipate how he's going to manipulate a situation. But I think Miguel is just as smart, if not smarter."

Guess we'll find out if that's true when Mayans M.C. returns for Season 2 on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 10/9c on FX.
