Marvel's Cloak & Dagger Boss Weighs in on That Mayhem Shocker

Talk about flipping the script! Marvel's Cloak & Dagger finally unleashed the ruthless vigilante Mayhem in the final moments of a wired two-hour premiere, and it did so in a shocking twist that raised more questions than it provided answers.

The final act of the Season 2 opener saw Brigid (Emma Lahana) rough up a corrupt paramedic believed to have aided in the kidnapping of young girls around the city before stabbing him to death in an uncharacteristic act of violence. Later on, Ty (Aubrey Joseph) found her locked in a closet and worried about a mysterious "she" who knows what she knows, which puts them all in danger.

After Ty teleported with Brigid over to Tandy (Olivia Holt), who was still at the scene with the dead paramedic, the bigger picture came into full focus: There were two Brigids!

"Well, I guess the cat's out of the bag," the second, murderous Brigid uttered before the screen cut to black.

So it looks like that dark energy did more than just give her new powers; it also split her into two different people. TV Guide chatted with showrunner Joe Pokaski about that stunning reveal and what that means moving forward, as well as what's in store for Cloak & Dagger in Season 2.

What's going on with the two Brigids? Was she split in half? Is one of them a clone?
Joe Pokaski: Mina Hess (Ally Maki), in our very first scene of Episode 3, is going to explain much better than I can, but I would say hang onto that. People have told the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story a lot, and we like the idea of playing with the fact that they're two physical beings. And what would happen if you got split into two people but one was nice and had an innate sense of justice? What would happen if you tore out the part of you that just wanted to burn down the world? Which side would have what properties? We're excited to tell the story of two different women with two different drives.

How will we see Brigid deal with being split in two, and its effects on her, over the course of the season?
Pokaski: It's gonna be a really interesting journey that's gonna take some turns that may break your heart. I think she's dealing with a lot. She should have died. She got her boyfriend killed. Her general sense of brashness got her into some trouble. And now, what happens when that brashness becomes its own thing? How much trouble will it get her into? How can we explore how fragile, how strong a woman can be all in one episode?

Tandy and Tyrone were stunned to see a second Brigid appear. How would you describe the way they view this new person? Do they see her as a threat? How do they feel about all of this?
Pokaski: I love how Tyrone, his first instinct is to protect Brigid, and you'll see that in Episode 3 and beyond. He becomes very protective of her because she was very protective of him in the first season. But I think this second season, for Tandy and Tyrone, is about what kind of heroes they are going to be. Mayhem, and to a lesser degree Brigid, became these touchstones as to what kind of hero are we gonna be? Because Mayhem is going to be ripping up the city, but one of them is going to point out pretty quickly that she's getting results so maybe that's not a bad thing. Mayhem is going to be either a cautionary tale or an aspirational one.

Ty also revealed his powers to Evita, who handled the reveal surprisingly well. How does that change things for their relationship and the way that she views him?
Pokaski: One of the things that kept eating at me this season and the first thing I talked to the writers about was that she did all the work in their relationship. She took his phone, she typed her number in, she got him to the part, she kind of showed up in his room. She's a beautiful girlfriend and he needs to do some work. So I think step one was making sure he had something to share with her. We got to see the superhero moment where you show the powers and normally, the girlfriend will be like, "Oh my gosh, I didn't know about that. You're dealing with all this stuff." But in Evita's case, she went right to, "So you could have been with me this whole time and you didn't." It's just fun. Evita and Tyrone now get to take their relationship to the next level. And it's not just him who has to level up this year; she's gonna have some responsibility as well.

Does that mean she's going to play a more active role in the superhero stuff?
Pokaski: She's gonna have plenty to do. There's a couple of episodes where it all kind of rests on her. She's gonna have more responsibility and a little more power as the season goes.

Tandy's trying to get a fresh start with her mother, which, given their history, won't be easy. What can you say about their attempt to rebuild that broken relationship?
Pokaski: I'm really excited about what Tandy does this year. Tandy's a little skeptical as to the group and how to deal with abuse. Even in the first episode, when mom starts digging into the real, Tandy's instinct is to just run away. The interesting thing about Tandy is she goes through a lack of understanding of what it's like to be a victim, to even some victim blame that she shouldn't do. She then goes through something herself, which puts her out on the other side, really having an understanding of some of the difficulties her mom's going through. And I think it's a real interesting journey Olivia takes. Because we haven't shown all their powers yet, we get to have all this anger and confusion build up in Tandy and manifest itself in this light bomb and some other things that will show up throughout the course of the season.

We saw Cloak's and Dagger's powers evolve over the course of last season, with Tandy learning to throw her light daggers and Ty start to get a handle on his teleportation. How will their powers change in Season 2?
Pokaski: There' a lot of arrows in that quiver, to steal from other superheroes. We got to really give them some volatile emotions and that generally resulted in some volatile powers. We'll get to see Tandy stepping into Tyrone's cloak for the first time. We'll get to see Tandy's confusion and Tyrone's anger manifest in different ways.
