Will the White House respond?
More than 180,000 people have signed online petitions on Change.org and the White House's website calling for the exoneration of Steven Avery, the subject of the Netflix docuseries Making a Murderer.
Avery was convicted of murder in 2005 and is currently serving a life sentence. In 2003, Avery was released from prison after DNA evidence proved he had been falsely convicted of rape 18 years prior.
Netflix's Making a Murderer is a must-watch
The online petitions request that President Obama pardon Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, who was also convicted of murdering Teresa Halbach. As of Jan. 4, the petition on whitehouse.gov had accumulated more than 19,200 signatures. If it reaches 100,000 signatures, the White House is required to issue an official response to the petition.
Making a Murderer, which chronicles Avery's erroneous rape conviction and subsequent murder trial, premiered on Netflix last month.
