Rimes and Cibrian met on the set of the 2009 Lifetime TV movie, Northern Lights, when they were both married to other people. Rimes was previously married to Dean Sheremet, but they separated following reports of her extramarital relationship with Cibrian. The divorce was finalized in December of that year and she moved in with Cibrian, who divorced his wife of eight years, Brandi Glanville, shortly thereafter. Rimes and Cibrian wed in 2011.

In August 2012, Rimes checked into an in-patient facility for help with emotional issues.

"I went in and took care of myself because I was stressed, I was depressed and anxious, and I didn't know how to process everything," she told the magazine. "Going away was something I really needed to do."

While in treatment, Rimes continued to work on her 11th studio album Spitfire, which she said helped process more of her emotions. Now, Rimes says she's proud of who she is.

"Sometimes it takes walking through those tough times to come out the other side stronger and wiser," she says. "I'm gonna make mistakes as I move on in life, but that's who we are, and I'm fortunate that I've grown a lot and I'm proud of who I am now...it's a good place to be."
