The Derby was short one horse in the typical 20-horse race when Black Onyx, who had been in the No. 1 position in the starting gate, scratched due to a chipped bone in his front left ankle. Unfortunately, the scratch came too late for Fear the Kitten, the alternate, to get into the race since it came after the 9 a.m. Friday deadline.
