A drug overdose may have led to the death of Kris Kross rapper Chris Kelly, The Associated Press reports.

Kelly's mother, Donna Kelly Pratte, told authorities that her son became sick after taking cocaine and heroin on the night before he died, according to a police report obtained by the news agency. Pratte and Kelly's uncle, Lamar Williams, told police that Kelly had a history of drug abuse and experienced similar episodes in the past.

Kelly was found unresponsive on Wednesday in his Atlanta home. Paramedics tried administering CPR, but he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. An autopsy has already been performed on Kelly's body, and toxicology screening is pending to determine the cause of death.

Kelly, and his longtime rap partner Chris Smith, catapulted to fame in 1992 after the release of their debut album, Totally Krossed Out, and its No. 1 single, "Jump."
