Kathy Griffin: I Shouldn't Have Taken the Fashion Police Job

Fashion Police is finding that it's easier to dish it out than take it. The latest disaster to hit the E! series, in which fashion "experts" praise or slam celebrity wardrobe choices, was the high-profile exit of Kathy Griffin after just a handful of episodes as a new co-host. On Monday, Griffin elaborated on her decision.

Speaking to Howard Stern on The Howard Stern Show, Griffin admitted that she "probably shouldn't have taken the gig," US Weekly reports. But Melissa Rivers, a producer on the show and daughter of Kathy's dear late friend Joan Rivers, told her that she was the only person her mom would "have given her blessing to " to join the show.

Griffin got a little more specific on Monday's The View, opening up about Fashion Police's irksome culture. "After a while, I kind of felt like I was being forced to comment about pictures of beautiful women in perfect dresses and say kind of bad things," Griffin said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "As a feminist and a comic, it just didn't feel like the right fit for me."

She also likened Fashion Police to a "dog pile," adding, "Right now, on the red carpet, all these women look so great. I was hoping we could talk about the events themselves and the shows, so I didn't want to say that Meryl Streep didn't look great, because she looked great. So sometimes it felt disingenuous to me."

Griffin also noted that Fashion Police co-host Giuliana Rancic's controversial comment about Zendaya's dreadlocked hair at the Oscars was written by a male staffer and not Rancic. "Honestly, I think that everyone should've just improvised--she said it, and I was trying to be a team player, and the show is very formulaic, and that's how they like it. It's just not my thing. So when it came time to leave, they were very nice to me; they weren't mean or evil."

In addition to Rancic's publicly derided comment, Griffin's high-profile exit, and the death of Joan Rivers, Kelly Osbourne left the show in February after speaking out against Rancic's comments.
