Knots Landing's Julie Harris Dies at 87

Broadway icon Julie Harris, who also starred in Knots Landing, died Saturday of congestive heart failure at her home in West Chatham, Mass., The Associated Press reports. She was 87.

Born in Grosse Pointe, Mich., Harris began acting at an early age in school plays and went on to study drama at Yale University and The Actor's Studio.

Throughout her career, Harris won five Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Play, and was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Tony in 2002. Her starring roles included playing Sally Bowles in I Am a Camera, Joan of Arc in The Lark and Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst.

Harris also played Lilimae Clements on Knots Landing, and in the 1970s starred in the short-lived TV series Thicker Than Water and The Family Holvak. She won two Emmy Awards for her roles in the Hallmark Hall of Fame productions Little Moon of Alban (1958) and Victoria Regina (1961). She also acted in films including East of Eden, The Haunting and Reflections in a Golden Eye.

Harris had also suffered two strokes, one in 2001 and another one in 2010, the AP reports. She was married and divorced three times and is survived by son Peter Gurian.
