John Malkovich helped save the life of a man who suffered a freak accident in Toronto on Thursday, Canada's CBC reports.

The actor was on hand when 77-year-old Jim Walpole fell on some scaffolding and he slit his neck, which began spurting blood. Malkovich leapt into action and used his scarf to apply pressure to the man's throat.

"[He] took over just like a doctor," Walpole said after the incident. "I asked, 'What's your name?' He said, 'John.' And I didn't ask the last name because I didn't figure I'd remember it anyhow."

Ben Quinn, the owner of the nearby P.J. O'Quinn's restaurant where Walpole and his wife had been eating, also offered aid. The man received 10 stitches and was released from the hospital.

"Malkovich turned and thanked me. I thanked him," Walpole added. "We couldn't shake hands. I was covered in blood. He was just off, didn't want any attention. He's a gentleman and a compassionate person."

The Red actor is currently in Toronto performing in a stage production of The Giacomo Variations. Walpole and his wife Marilyn, 79, were stopping through on a cross-Canadian trip.
