In what seems more like a scenario out of Veep than real-life politics, Secretary of State John Kerry is cutting a trip to Europe short after breaking his leg in a biking accident in France, CNN reports.

Kerry, 71, broke his right femur while cycling in Scionzier, France on Sunday morning, and will return to Boston to have surgery. He received medical care at the scene and was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Geneva, where he was traveling to negotiate with Iranian diplomats about Iran's nuclear program. The injury is non-life-threatening and Kerry is expected to make a full recovery.

Kerry was scheduled to attend a counter-ISIL coalition meeting in Paris on Tuesday and then visit Spain. He will participate in the Paris meeting remotely, a spokesperson tells CNN.

In 1992, Kerry injured his shoulder in a cycling accident and previously underwent hip surgery, performed by the same doctor who will perform his upcoming operation.
