Hulu Is Closing the Book on Its John Grisham Universe

It looks like Hulu is sticking with Stephen King and Margaret Atwood as their authors of choice. The streaming service has decided to end its plans to launch a John Grisham TV universe, TV Guide has learned.

It was revealed in late 2018 that Hulu was developing two series -- The Rainmaker and Rogue Lawyer -- based on the iconic novelist's work. Code Black executive producer Michael Seitzman and Jason Richman were on board as writers and showrunners for the shows, which could be watched individually, but were also part of the same universe and could be watched together as well. If the series had worked, the universe could have been expanded to include Grisham's other work. Those plans will no longer continue at the streaming service, which is a shame, because A Time to Kill would still be extremely relevant in the 2020s.

The decision to move on from the Grisham universe comes in the same week that Hulu confirmed plans to expand the world of The Handmaid's Tale with a sequel series based on Atwood's latest book, The Testaments. The streamer is also in bed with King, who is an executive producer on Castle Rock, a series that includes many of his famous literary characters, locations, and themes. King also has an adaptation of his The Eyes of the Dragon series in the works at Hulu as well.
