Vice President Joe Biden appeared at the Oscars to spread awareness of his anti-campus rape initiative in the final year of the Obama administration. He encouraged college students to visit ItsOnUs.org to take a pledge to get consent for every sexual encounter.

"The pledge says I will intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given," Biden said. "Let's change the culture, we must and we can change the culture."

He then introduced Lady Gaga, whom he described as his friend, to perform her nominated song "'Til It Happens to You" from The Hunting Ground.

Lady Gaga then performed, clad entirely in white with a matching white piano and microphone. It was an emotional, dramatic performance. She was surrounded by sexual assault survivors with various words, including "Not Your Fault" and "Happened to Me," written on their arms.
