Oscar-Nominated Actress Joan Lorring Dies at 88

Actress Joan Lorring, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1946 for her role in The Corn is Green, died Friday in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., The Associated Press reports. She was 88, and a cause of death was not disclosed.

Born Mary Magdalene Ellis in Hong Kong, Lorring moved to the United States with her mother in 1939 following the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong.

She began her career in radio in San Francisco and went on to act on the stage and screen. She made her film debut in 1944's Song of Russia. Lorring's Academy Award nomination came two years later for her role as Bessie Watty, opposite Bette Davis, in The Corn is Green. Her other film credits include Three Strangers and The Verdict (1946).

As a Broadway actress, Lorring won the Donaldson Award in 1950 for her role in Come Back, Little Sheba. Her television credits include The Love Boat and the soap opera Ryan's Hope. She retired from acting in 1980.

Lorring is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren. Her husband, Dr. Martin Sonenberg, died in 2011.
