Jeopardy! Showdown: Human and Supercomputer Tied After Round 1

Jeopardy! all-time winner Brad Rutter and the supercomputer dubbed "Watson" are neck-and-neck after their challenge began Monday.

Rutter and former contestant Ken Jennings — who holds the game show's longest winning streak— are facing off against the IBM machine that has been in development for two years. Named for IBM founder Thomas J. Watson, the machine is powered by 10 racks of computer servers running the Linux operating system.

Rutter, who won nearly $3.3 million in 2005, and Watson ended the first round tied at $5,000, while Jennings lagged behind at $2,000. 

Watson knew the correct answer for a "four-letter word for a vantage point or a belief" was "what is a view?", but fumbled "stylish elegance, or students who all graduated in the same year." (Watson's answer: "What is chic?" Rutter then replied correctly, "What is class?")

The matches will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the winner collecting $1 million. The competition was taped last month.
