The Good Wife's Kalinda left some big boots to fill, but Jeffrey Dean Morgan has taken on the challenge! The former Grey's Anatomy fan favorite has joined the CBS drama as a series regular, the network announced on Monday.

"We've loved and admired Jeffrey Dean Morgan for years," executive producers Robert and Michelle King said in a statement. "And we were thrilled to hear that Julianna [Margulies] did too, so it was a no-brainer to ask him to join our troupe."

Morgan will play Alex, a calm and experienced investigator whom Alicia hires and, if we're so bold as to surmise, perhaps gets romantically involved with him too. (OK, we're just hoping here, but Matthew Goode did exit, leaving a hole in Alicia's heart.)

As previously announced, British actress Cush Jumbo (Torchwood) will recur next season, but when we asked if she was replacing Archie Panjabi, the Kings told us, "I wouldn't say she's replacing Archie because she's irreplaceable, but we wanted someone who could fill that same interesting dynamic on the show without doing the same thing. We're still figure out exactly [her role], but we're not suggesting that Cush will be an investigator or take on that role."

Morgan currently stars on CBS' summer series Extant. Season 7 of The Good Wife premieres Sunday, Oct. 4 at 9/8c.
