James Cameron made a surprise appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas Thursday to announce that Avatarwill now feature four sequels.

The films will roll out Christmas 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023, respectively. "We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process," Cameron said during the 20th Century Fox presentation.

Cameron had originally planned two sequels to the 2009 film before expanding to three in 2013. He is simultaneously writing the previously announced three films with Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver and Shane Salerno. It is unclear who is writing the extra film.
