It's Official: Hillary Clinton Announces 2016 Presidential Campaign

It's official: Hillary Clinton is running for president.

Clinton, 67, threw her hat in the ring in a video titled "Getting Started" posted on social media Sunday, an announcement that was not so much a surprise but a formality at this point.

"Everyday Americans need a champion. And I want to be that champion," Clinton said in the video, which was posted shortly after 3 p.m. ET on Sunday. "So I'm hitting the road to earn your vote -- because it's your time. And I hope you'll join me on this journey."

Clinton has indicated that equal wages and the domestic economy will be among her main platforms.

Clinton is the third person to officially announce a presidential run this election season, on the heels of Republicans Ted Cruz and Rand Paul.

Clinton previously ran for president in 2008, but lost the nomination to then-candidate Barack Obama. Later, she served under President Obama as Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013. She also, of course, was First Lady when her husband President Bill Clinton occupied the White House from 1993 to 2001, and served as a U.S. Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009.

If she wins the party's nomination, she will be the first woman from any major party to do so.

Clinton is considered the Democratic frontrunner in the 2016 race, and is the first candidate from the party to officially announce her campaign. However, she's been the subject of scandals in recent weeks, including accusations that she exclusively used a personal email account during her time as Secretary of State. She also has come under fire for her handling of the 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi.

In her concession speech in 2008, Clinton told her female supporters: "Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it's got about 18 million cracks in it. And the light is shining through like never before, filling us all with the hope and the sure knowledge that the path will be a little easier next time."

Clinton will follow up her announcement with campaign stops in Iowa and New Hampshire.
