Parks and Recreation Producer Found Dead of Apparent Drug Overdose

Harris Wittels, a co-executive producer of Parks and Recreation, was found dead in his home Thursday from a possible drug overdose, TMZ reports. He was 30 years old.

Wittels was found lying on his couch by his assistant, and he was pronounced dead at approximately 1 p.m. Drug paraphernalia was found in the house, and there were no signs of trauma to his body.

Wittels had spoken publicly about his past struggles with drug addiction. He had gone to rehab twice. During a stand-up set he performed Wednesday night in Los Angeles, he reportedly talked about being clean and sober.

Prior to Parks and Rec, Wittels worked on The Sarah Silverman Program and Eastbound & Down. He had been with Parks and Rec since the critical darling's 2009 debut, moving up from story editor to co-executive producer. He wrote 12 episodes of the series, most recently "Ron & Jammy," the second episode of Season 7. Parks' series finale airs Tuesday at 10/9c on NBC.

He was also a drummer and back-up vocalist for the group Don't Stop or We'll Die with fellow comedians Michael Cassady and Paul Rust. They were scheduled to perform at the Upright Citizens Bridage Theater on Feb. 28.
