Grey's Anatomy Recap: Who's Team Callie and Who's Team Arizona?

Colleagues get roped into their custody battle

Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona's (Jessica Capshaw) custody battle gets more complicated on Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy (as did off-screen speculation that Ramirez will be leaving the show). But while we'll have to wait until next week to find out who's granted sole custody of Sofia, all the pieces are in place for some severed friendships along the way.

Both Callie and Arizona ask Alex (Justin Chambers) to testify on their behalf, and he refuses, saying he's not going to pick sides. But Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) both agree to testify for Callie, while Webber (James Pickens Jr.) appears to be in Arizona's court, encouraging her to fight for Sofia like she's never fought for anything in her life.

Arizona also tries to ask Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) to testify for her, but gets interrupted by Penny (Samantha Sloyan), who's been assigned to work with Arizona for the day. Awkward! Despite a tense almost-altercation when Arizona accuses Penny of being a spy for Callie, Penny comes away from the experience with a pretty positive view of Arizona, as she tells Callie at the end of the day. Will this spell trouble for Callie's case? Probably.

Calm down, Grey's fans: Sara Ramirez (probably) isn't leaving the show

Elsewhere in the episode, Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) brings Hot Guitarist Kyle (Wilmer Valderrama) back to the hospital because he's developed another tremor, this time in his other hand. Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) opts to perform surgery that afternoon and kicks Stephanie off of his case because of that pesky doctors-can't-date-their-patients rule. This does not sit well with Stephanie, and she eventually ends up breaking up with Kyle, explaining to Jo (Camilla Luddington) that she's not the type of person who can sit in a waiting room rather than the OR.

Jackson and April also get a pregnancy scare when Arizona notices something on the baby's brain during an ultrasound. It turns out to be nothing, but Arizona recuses herself from their case anyway, saying she can be April's doctor or her friend, but not both.

Meredith and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) get a morning surprise in the form of Amelia and Owen passed out naked in the living room after a night of hot sex. Initially, Amelia and Owen try to pass it off as just a one time thing, but after some encouragement from Meredith, Amelia hightails it to Owen's trailer, where she makes an impassioned plea to give a relationship a go, despite all the obstacles they'll face. She and Owen promise each other (sweetly) that they're definitely going to screw this up, but ultimately decide to throw caution to the wind and go for it anyway.

Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Ben (Jason George) also come to a truce after he acts as the anesthesiologist in one of her surgeries and ends up saving the patient's life. A chagrined Bailey re-adds him to the surgery whiteboard, but notes that he still has to sleep on the couch at home. Fair enough.

Next week's episode will feature the court proceedings in the case for Sofia. I'm wondering if Penny's newfound respect for Arizona will cause her to feel guilty about dragging Callie across the country and further breaking up their already-fractured family. What do you think, Grey's fans?

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
