The Goldbergs finally landed its spin-off at ABC.
The network announced Monday that it is picking up 13 episodes of a '90s-set spinoff from The Goldbergs starring Tim Meadows as Principal Glascott, Bryan Callen as Coach Mellor and AJ Michalka as Lainey Lewis. All three characters have been featured on The Goldbergs. Michalka joins the cast of the spin-off after Nia Long departed the pilot due to her series regular gig on NCIS: LA, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The series will revolve around Glascott and Mellor as they become "unexpected father figures" to the students at the Philadelphia school. Michalka joins the cast after recurring on the first two seasons of The Goldbergs and as a series regular in the third and fourth seasons as Barry's (Troy Gentle) ex-girlfriend. She still recurs in the currently airing fifth season.
If the news confuses you because you thought the project was dead, don't worry. It was dead at one point when ABC rejected the pilot last pilot season, but gained new life when it aired in January of this year as a "regular" The Goldbergs episode and earned 1.7 rating among adults 18-49 and 6 million viewers. The Goldbergs is already renewed for the 2018-19 season, and is currently enjoying a bit of a resurgence thanks to airing reruns in syndication.
ABC has some experience with spinning off its current family comedies. Earlier this year, the network spun off black-ish with the college-focused grown-ish on ABC sibling Freeform.
The still untitled Goldbergs spin-off joins The Rookie and Take Two on ABC's list of new series pick-ups. The network has also renewed Roseanneand The Good Doctor for next season, with more pickups to come in the weeks leading up ABC's Upfronts presentation in May.
The Goldbergs airs Wednesday nights at 8/7c on ABC.
