George R.R. Martin's Third 'Holy Sh--' Moment from Game of Thrones Revealed

Game of Thrones fans have known for quite some time that there were at least three moments from the post-book seasons that came straight from the mind of George R.R. Martin, including one from the series finale.

The show's co-creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff revealed in 2016 that once the source material from Martin's books ran out, the author gave them a rough road map of the major events ahead in his final two installments, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. That entailed what they called "three holy sh-- moments," two of which were later revealed to be the grisly burning death of Shireen Baratheon and the gutting origin story of Hodor.

Until now, fans couldn't be quite sure what the third moment might be -- although surely everyone had their suspicions -- but thanks to actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright, we finally know what event from the finale fans can almost definitely expect to read about if and when those books ever hit shelves.

Speaking to HBO, the actor revealed that it was Bran Stark's ascension to the Iron Throne -- or what remains of it anyway -- that came straight from Martin's list, explaining, "David and Dan told me there were two things George R.R. Martin had planned for Bran, and that was the Hodor revelation, and that he would be king. So that's pretty special to be directly involved in something that is part of George's vision. It was a really nice way to wrap it up."

Martin himself previously spoke out about the level of connection between the Game of Thrones ending and what's in store for his book series, but he didn't go so far as to spell out which parts of the finale stemmed from his own story plans. "How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different?" he wrote in a post-finale blog. "Well... yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes."

So, with that, we still don't know whether the fates of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), the rest of the Starks, the dragons, or anyone else will be echoed in his pages. But it sounds like those who are hoping for a different ending for their favorites might just be in luck after all. We can hear the new fan petitions being typed up already.
