This Is As Close As You Can Get to Game of Thrones Without Going to Westeros

Game of Thrones Behind the Scenes interactive experiences allow fans to experience Season 6 as if they were really there

Game of Thrones Season 6 came out on Blu-Ray/DVD Nov. 15, and to celebrate the release, HBO is inviting fans inside the show with "Game of Thrones Behind the Scenes" interactive events in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. The pop-ups feature props and production elements from the series, a special look at bonus content from the Blu-Ray/DVD, and best of all, interactive displays that put you inside of memorable scenes from Season 6.

I visited the installation Friday in New York's Astor Place. There are five huts, each covering a different Game of Thrones location. Here's what fans will experience if they visit this very special Game of Thrones event.

Feeling like Daenerys at Vaes Dothrak

One of the most memorable scenes from Season 6 is when Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) asserts her superiority to the patriarchal Dothraki Khals by burning down their temple and killing them all, then emerging naked and unburnt from the flames to a sea of adoring Dothraki, reclaiming her rightful role as Khaleesi.

You can recreate this iconic moment in the Vaes Dothrak hut. After getting an up-close look at Daario Naharis' (Michael Huisman) sexy scimitar and the Dothraki-language pronunciation guide actors were given by writers, you can get your picture taken in front of a greenscreen. Then a friendly technician will place that photo on top of a fiery backdrop. Unfortunately, nudity is not an option, and in fact you can cover yourself up even more than usual with a modesty-protecting burlap sack.

Holding the Door

Admit it, you cried when Hodor (Kristian Nairn) died holding the door to save Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) from the attacking wights. Well, you can memorialize Hodor by holding the door yourself in the North of the Wall hut, which also includes an animated short from the DVD extras that dives deep into the history of the war between the Children of the Forest and the First Men that led to the creation of the White Walkers.

(By the way, Ellie Kendrick, who delivered the "hold the door!" line, was at the event on Friday; check back for an interview with the actress behind Meera Reed, which I'll be posting soon.)

Battling the Bastards

In the Winterfell hut, you'll find amazing props like Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Melisandre's (Carice van Houten) cloaks, Shireen Baratheon's (Kerry Ingram) burnt toy and Wun Wun the Giant's hand. Then you can get your head superimposed on Jon Snow's body as emerges from a pile of corpses during the Battle of the Bastards.

Claiming the Iron Throne

In the hut called the Workshop, you'll get to sit on the Iron Throne, just like you do in your dreams.

Protecting the Castle
Perhaps the coolest hut is Castle Black, where you'll be transported to the Wall via the immersive magic of VR. Put on a headset and hold controllers in your hands and suddenly you're in the courtyard of Castle Black shooting arrows at targets and fending off rocks being flung over the walls with your shield. You'll feel like Bran when the Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow) took him inside of memories. There are no photos available from that, unfortunately.

The "Game of Thrones Behind the Scenes" events are taking place at Astor Place in New York City on Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19, followed by stops at Grant Park in Chicago on Saturday, Nov. 26 and Sunday, Nov. 27, and at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 9 and Saturday, Dec. 10. The operating hours for all events and dates are 12:30-8pm. Fans can sign up at GoTBehindTheScenes.com for expedited entry.
