It's been a rollercoaster day for Game of Thrones fans. Hours after it was reported that the Naomi Watts-led prequel series was dead at HBO, the powers that be, aka HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys, announced a different Game of Thrones spin-off has been ordered straight to series.

Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon follows another George R.R. Martin novel, Fire & Blood, and tells the story of House Targaryen in the earlier days of Westeros. The show was co-created by Martin and executive producer Ryan Condal. Miguel Sapochnik, who directed a number of the biggest episodes of the original series, including "Hardhome," "Battle of the Bastards," and "The Long Night," will direct the pilot as well as additional episodes of the 10-episode first season. Condal and Sapochnik will partner as showrunners on the series.
