The creators have a number in mind
The end of Game of Thrones is in sight -- probably.
Show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently told Deadline that they need approximately 13 episodes to end the series. "It's two more seasons we're talking about. From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70-75 hours, and that's what we'll end up with. Call it 73 for now," Benioff said.
Sam is the key to Game of Thrones ending
The quote falls in line with what Benioff and Weiss told Variety in April. They're planning two shorter final seasons for the HBO epic with seven episodes in Season 7 and six episodes to wrap everything up. While HBO renewed Game of Thrones through Season 8 earlier this year, the network told TVGuide.com Tuesday that it has not confirmed whether Season 8 will be the final season or how many episodes have been ordered.
Game of Thrones Season 6 finale ratings hit series high
Benioff and Weiss are confident the show is winding down though, according to the Deadline article. "We're trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end. As [Weiss] said, we've known the end for quite some time and we're hurtling towards it," Benioff continued.
The explosive Season 6 finale ended with Cersei (Lena Headey) taking the Iron Throne, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) sailing her army to Westeros and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) being crowned King of the North, setting up the major leaders for one last final show down.
