CW Seed, the CW's online channel, will debut an animated series in 2017 that will feature the first gay superhero lead.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray is based on Grant Morrison's comic Multiversity, a take on the Freedom Fighters superhero team that updated the patriotic DC characters to better reflect America's demographics. The news was announced Thursday at the Television Critics Association fall previews.

The Ray is a member of the Freedom Fighters who, as a reporter, discovered a team of government scientists who were working to turn light into a WMD. An assassination attempt gave him super powers including light manipulation and flight. So he decided to continue fighting injustice, but with his body rather than his pen. Also, he's gay.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray is executive-produced by CW superhero honchos Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim. Will you watch?
