The Fosters Returns For a Turmoil-Filled Second Season

It's crisis time. ABC Family's The Fosters returns Monday for Season 2, picking up where last spring's calamitous cliffhangers left off. Teen pianist Brandon (David Lambert), who was beaten to a pulp by punks, will emerge with a badly injured hand. "His life's dream may be over and, in many ways, he has only himself to blame," says executive producer/writer Joanna Johnson.

Brandon is also distraught over his drunken sex session with Dani (Marla Sokoloff), the girlfriend of his father, Mike (Danny Nucci). "There's much more tolerance in society for women having sex with underage boys than there is when it's an older man and a young girl," Johnson says. "We are going to explore that double standard."

Mike may be in big trouble of his own: The recovering alcoholic got hammered the same night drug-addicted Ana (Alexandra Barreto) disappeared. "He came home with blood on his hands," says Johnson, "a mystery that will play out for a while."

And poor Callie (Maia Mitchell)! She just found out that Donald (Jamie McShane) is not her birth father, which has stopped her formal adoption by the Fosters and may separate her from her brother Jude (Hayden Byerly). "Callie already had big trust issues and, once again, the rug has been pulled out from under her," says Johnson. "Now she's about to meet her real father."

The Fosters airs Mondays at 9/8c on ABC Family.
