The series boasted one of the year's most bizarre premises, as it followed a DEA agent who went undercover as a professional soccer player. Gabriel Luna starred alongside Alfred MolinaNicky Whelan and Neil Hopkins.Matador was El Rey's second original program after From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series.

Fans may want to kick the shins of El Rey executives over the cancellation, as the network went back on its word after renewing the show for a second season before the series ever premiered. But poor international ratings and a costly budget forced El Rey to reverse its decision.
