The producers also say that their "substantial contribution" to the first film and their 'initial development" of the sequel entitles them to compensation. In addition, the contract they signed for Dumb and Dumber allegedly gave them a "right of first negotiation for sequels and remakes on terms at least as favorable as their terms for producing the Original." They explain that this means they should get paid "even if the studio decides to hire another producer for the sequel, so long as the producer is willing and able to produce the sequel."According to the lawsuit, Red Granite has developed a "pattern" of misconduct and attempted the same thing to producer Alexandra Milchan on The Wolf of Wall Street.
