Designated Survivor: Tom Kirkman Will Declare War This Season

But with who? And why?

America is going to war!

That's normally nothing to celebrate, but this war will take place on ABC's Designated Survivor, giving the series a serious dramatic boost, and one that will test the mettle of Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) as he embarks on his greatest decision since being thrust into the presidency.

Details on the who/what/why aren't out yet, but showrunner Keith Eisner tells TV Guide that war definitely will happen.

"Without getting too specific, we have the United States at war in the back half [of Season 2] ," Eisner said in teasing the new season. And that's going to be a tough process for Kirkman, who is still reeling from the sudden and accidental death of the First Lady (Natascha McElhone). "What is it like to be a wartime president when you're alone in the White House? And does solitude effect your decision making process?"

What we do know is that Kirkman will be the one declaring war, and he'll be forced to do so because of something that happens on American soil, according to Eisner. And of course, one of the show's major characters will be very tied into the lead-up to the war, though not necessarily the cause of it.

Sounds like Designated Survivor is pushing Kirkman to the max this season.

Designated Survivor returns Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 10/9c on ABC.
