Designated Survivor's Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) has had his share of problems as President of the United States, like a shady cabal trying to assassinate him, the death of the First Lady and a frog being honorarily named after him. But one thing that's been plaguing Kirkman and his administration for far too long are the empty positions in his cabinet. And at long last, one major role will be filled in Season 2, and it's a biggie!

"There will be a vice president that [Tom] will actually select and will be appointed," Designated Survivor showrunner Keith Eisner told TV Guide. "It's a very interesting episode as to how that happens. We don't want to tip who that vice president will be, but that will be filled out for sure."

The role of vice president hasn't been filled since Peter MacLeish (Ashley Zukerman), who turned out to be a terrorist pawn and was murdered, so we're long overdue for a new veep. But who could it be? Kirkman certainly could appoint someone close to him, someone that he trusts. But when asked if Kirkman would appoint someone we already know, Eisner shot that down quickly.

"It's a new character," he said.

Designated Survivor has several actors joining the back half of Season 2 -- such as Michael J. Fox, Breckin Meyer and Kim Raver -- so they're all possibilities for the crucial role, but we're betting that the new veep will be played by an undisclosed surprise actor.

Designated Survivor airs Wednesday nights at 10/9c on ABC.
