Denis Leary Returning to FX to Star in Comedy Pilot Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll

Denis Leary is returning to FX!

The former Rescue Mestar will headline a new half-hour comedy pilot for the network, TVGuide.com has learned.

Created by Leary, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll follows Johnny Rock, a middle-aged rock 'n roller who desperately wanted to be rich and famous and has failed at both. As the talented lead singer of New York's legendary early 90's band The Heathens, Johnny was on his way to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, but his problem with alcohol and other various drugs, along with sleeping with his bandmates' wives, led to the band's split the same day their only record was released. Now, 25 years late, Johnny attempts to get the band back together.

"Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is a terrific script and concept with Denis Leary's signature brand of comedy," FX President of Original Programming, Eric Schrier, said in a statement. "Denis is a tremendous talent who played a major role in the growth of our network with Rescue Me, which was one of the most groundbreaking series of the last decade. We're thrilled to have him back home at FX."

Added Leary: "I am very excited to be returning to FX where working with Nick [Grad], Eric and John Landgraf has been one of the best creative experiences of my life. Plus I hear they have much better swag now." 

Leary will write and executive-produce alongside Jim Serpico (Rescue Me). The project will shoot this spring in New York City, where it will feature original music and occasional guest appearances by actual rock stars. Leary and Serpico are also executive-producing another half-hour comedy, Sirens, which debuts March 6 at 10/9c on USA.

Following his seven-year stint on Rescue Me, Leary appeared in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man.
