David Duchovny has lined up a killer follow-up role to Californication.

The Golden Globe winner will star on Aquarius, a new NBC series about the real-life serial killer Charles Manson, the network announced on Monday.

In the drama, which has received a 13-episode order, Duchovny will play a Los Angeles police sergeant in the late 1960s tracking a small-time criminal and budding cult leader who seeks out vulnerable women to join his "cause." That man is Charles Manson.

This complicated undercover operation leads Duchovny's character and his young partner to the brink of Manson's crimes that will eventually lead to the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders in subsequent seasons. Duchovny will executive-produce with writer John McNamara (In Plain Sight), Marty Adelstein (Prison Break) and Melanie Greene.

"After being involved in the production of both The X-Files and Californication, it gives me great pleasure to work with David Duchovny for the third time on this compelling drama," Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. "I'm especially pleased that he wanted to come to NBC where I know there is a big audience waiting to see him."

More TV shows we're losing this year

Added Duchovny: "I'm thrilled to be working with Bob Greenblatt again and coming back to broadcast television. I think Aquarius has a chance to be a special show and I can't wait to get going."

Best known for his portrayal of FBI Agent Fox Mulder on the long-running sci-fi series The X-Files, Duchovny currently stars on the Showtime comedy Californication, which kicks off its seventh and final season next month.
