Sopranos creator David Chase is coming back to HBO.
The multi-award-winning writer-director is returning to the cable channel to develop A Ribbon of Dreams,a miniseries about the birth and growth of the Hollywood film industry. In addition to writing and producing the miniseries, Chase will also direct the initial episodes.
The miniseries is set in 1913 and follows two men —a college-educated mechanical engineer and a cowboy with a violent past — who form a partnership and become motion picture pioneers. They begin as employees of D.W. Griffith and cross paths with John Ford, John Wayne, Bette Davis and others as the industry evolves from silent westerns to talking pictures and into the studio system, age of television, and into present day.
"The return of David Chase to HBO is great news for our viewers," HBO's programming president Michael Lombardo said in a statement. "The epic scope of this miniseries will provide the perfect setting for his remarkable creative gifts."
The miniseries takes its name from an Orson Welles quote: "A film is a ribbon of dreams." HBO has not indicated how many hours will be filmed for the miniseries or when it will debut.
Prior to The Sopranos, Chase executive produced I'll Fly Away and Northern Exposure. He is also writing a feature for Paramount Pictures.
