Darren Criss is prepping for his next role - playing the title character in Broadway's Hedwig and the Angry Inch - and on Monday released the first photo of himself as the German transgender rocker.

"I put on some makeup ...," Criss captioned the photo.

John Cameron Mitchell, who starred as Hedwig in the original movie, is currently starring in the show on Broadway. Criss takes over the role on April 29.

Since the revival opened about a year ago, Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells and Michael C. Hall have all played Hedwig, with Harris winning a Tony for his performance.
