Something clearly went down between them

Jack (Gary Sinise) is getting an unwelcome blast from the past on Wednesday's episode of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

In the first of two episodes, the team heads to Johannesburg after a student is murdered and his brother goes missing. The case is such a big deal that Brigadier General Yazeen Zwane (Mykelti Williamson) has called in reinforcements to work with the IRT: Lieutenant Ananda Doshi (Bahni Turpin), who has a rocky history with Jack.

"Are you sure you're gonna be OK working with her again?" Clara (Alana De La Garza) grills him in the exclusive sneak peek above. "Is this the same Ananda Doshi that's responsible for catching Gabriel Amani, a.k.a the Archangel in Madagascar?" Mae (Annie Funke) asks.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders Mega Buzz: Will Jack's son join the team?

Jack says "yes" to both of those -- "Look, if they want her, we got her" -- but clearly some sh-- went down between Jack and Ananda during that case. What could've happened? We have a couple theories.

1. This is another Blake-Strauss situation
Remember the frosty tension between Blake (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and Strauss (Jayne Atkinson) on Criminal Minds? Strauss (RIP) let Blake take the fall for arresting the wrong suspect in the Amerithrax case, and Blake, her reputation having taken a huge hit, held a grudge against Strauss basically through all of Season 8. Maybe Ananda did the same to Jack on a smaller scale before nabbing the Archangel herself. After all, Jack's sterling reputation precedes him everywhere now (he was the only person allowed to carry a firearm in Japan), but the immediate aftermath might have felt interminable.

2. She stole his thunder
Going in the complete opposite direction, perhaps Jack solved/got the break in the Archangel case himself, but Ananda -- whether purposefully or accidentally -- took credit for it. Not wanting to appear like sour grapes, he's never told higher-ups, but it obviously still sticks in his craw.

3. There was major collateral damage
Ananda, who has an unorthodox style of investigation, probably clashed with Jack's by-the-book approach. Because they couldn't compromise and focus on the case, more innocent victims and maybe even fellow agents died at the Archangel's hand. They both got reamed and haven't yet made amends.

4. They had an affair
Probably not. Sinise was adamant about making Jack both a stand-up family man -- married to his high school sweetheart with six kids -- and FBI agent, so he wouldn't allow for this. But maybe Ananda came onto him and made things super awkward?

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders airs back-to-back episodes Wednesday starting at 9/8c on CBS. Watch an exclusive sneak peek from the second hour below.
