Here Come the Judds

While the Judds' farewell tour is the impetus for this new six-part reality series about the country duo, music is only a small part of The Judds. The underlying theme is the often strained relationship between mom Naomi and daughter Wynonna.

Naomi admits having reservations about opening up old wounds that formed during those early days of their musical partnership. "When it started out, it was just a disaster, because she was so young. She wanted to go to fraternity parties and date, and I had to make the outfits, write the songs, emcee the show... It was overwhelming."

Wynonna agrees those were trying times. "[I saw] her as this career woman, very ambitious and full of a lot of expectations for me as a performer," she says. "Now I'm able to really enjoy her... To really celebrate her as my mother."

That newfound perspective and respect is something both hope viewers will relate to. "It's our stories that connect us, isn't it?" posits Naomi, a vocal proponent of self-help sessions. "I've been in therapy with Wy, and [actress daughter] Ashley, and my husband for about 10 years. I think everyone could use some communication skills." Adds Wynonna, "I want people to see the healing that is taking place, to see how much joy and celebration there is in our family and not just the drama that has been portrayed in the past."

The Judds premieres Sunday at 9/8c on OWN.
