Christian Bale called in to a Los Angeles radio program to apologize for the expletive-laden audio clip (link contains profanity) that has made the Internet rounds this week.

The Dark Knight actor also offered some context to his now-world-famous argument with Shane Hurlbut that took place on the set of Terminator Salvation. (Hurlbut is the film's director of photography.) "It has been a miserable week for me. I know I have a potty mouth ..., but I was way out of order. I acted like a punk. I regret that.... I make no excuses — it is inexcusable," Bale told KROQ deejays Kevin & Bean. (An audio clip of their entire 10-minute-long exchange is posted now on KROQ's website if you're curious.)

Bale pointed to it being a particularly emotional day on the set, since he was filming a scene in which John Connor reveals that he might have inherited his mother Sarah's mental instability. "I ask everybody to sit down and ask themselves, 'Have they ever had a bad day and have they ever lost their temper and really regretted it immensely?'" he asked. He went on to say that there are no hard feelings between him and Hurlbut, and that he hopes his tantrum doesn't prevent people from seeing the film, which hits theaters on May 22.

Calls and emails to Bale's rep by TVGuide.com were not returned.
