Carrie Underwood is ready for some football.

NBC has named the American Idolwinner the new singer of the Sunday Night Footballtheme, "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night." Football fans can look for Underwood on SNF's Sept. 8 season debut, when the New York Giants play the Dallas Cowboys.

"I am thrilled to be a part of NBC's Sunday Night Football and am so honored they asked me," Underwood said in a statement Tuesday. "I have always loved football season, and it is so exciting to now become a part of it Sunday night."

Fall TV scorecard: Which shows are returning? Which aren't?

Underwood replaces Faith Hill, who announced she was stepping down last month after six years. "Amazing 2 have been part of SNF - an honor. I've just let everyone there know it's time 2 let someone else rock the open," Hill tweeted on April 15. "Difficult decision. Kinda emotional. Love all u guys at SNF - I'll b watching!!!" Hill took over for Pink, who sang NBC's Sunday Night Football theme in 2006. Hill's family is one tied to football: musician husband, Tim McGraw, has provided music for Monday Night Football.

Underwood is starring in NBC's upcoming live production of The Sound of Music, which is tentatively set to air in the winter.
