Carrie Underwood to Play Maria von Trapp in NBC's The Sound of Music

The hills are alive! NBC is planning a live broadcast of The Sound of Music, and Grammy winner Carrie Underwood has been cast in the lead role as Maria von Trapp, the network announced Friday.

NBC is planning a live broadcast of The Sound of Music, and Grammy winner Carrie Underwood has been cast in the lead role as Maria von Trapp, the network announced Friday.

Smash producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are also producing the 85th Annual Academy Awards, will helm the telecast, which will be based on the original Broadway musical. A premiere date has not been announced, but it will air sometime during the 2013 holidays.

"We're thrilled to be presenting the Broadway version of The Sound of Music live and having Carrie Underwood as the star brings it to a new generation who will fall in love with it for the first time as many millions of people already have," NBC said in a statement.
