Bull Offers Its Spin on Serial

Plus: Why did Benny leave the DA's office?

Bulloffered a twist on the podcast Serial in Tuesday's episode, with its case-of-the-week stemming from a popular podcast that's analyzing the murder of a star athlete years prior, allegedly by a woman who previously accused him of sexual assault.

Dr. Bull (Michael Weatherly) goes to visit the accused killer in prison, and after their meeting he agrees to take her case pro bono. The case pits Benny (Freddy Rodriguez) face to face with his ex-girlfriend, a fellow attorney named Amanda (Tiffany Villarin), and it's clear there's no love lost between them. (Though it's possible Bull is trying to engineer a reconciliation, since he knows Amanda's prosecuting the case when he assigns it to Benny.)

We learn that Benny, who's also Bull's former brother-in-law, met Amanda when they worked together at the DA's office. Benny left the office when the legal team there was about to convict an innocent man, and assumed that Amanda would come with him, but things didn't work out that way.

17 times Michael Weatherly was our favorite Goof-Bull

Benny and Bull win the case, clearing their client's name and proving that Benny bests Amanda when it comes to lawyering. Turns out Benny hasn't dated anyone seriously since things ended between the two of them -- and Bull also hasn't had a serious relationship since his marriage ended. (Wonder when we'll find out that backstory?)

But it's possible the flame between them will reignite. Amanda comes up to the office and has a conversation with Benny in which she explains that job security prevented her from leaving the DA's office with him, Jerry Maguire style, but that she understands why he did it (and maybe even admires him for it?). And, as if it wasn't obvious enough already, Benny tells Chunk (Christopher Jackson) that he'd get back together with Amanda in a heartbeat if she ever wanted him back. Something tells me this isn't the last we'll be seeing of her...

Bull airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on CBS.
