Box Office: The Hobbit Dominates

But how did it stack up to the previous films?

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies proved unconquerable at the box office this weekend, opening in first place with $56.2 million, Box Office Mojo reports. Still, that's the lowest debut weekend of any of the films in the Hobbit franchise.

Meanwhile, the third movie in the Night at the Museum franchise -- Secret of the Tomb -- opened in second place with a modest $17.3 million, edging out Annie, which earned $16.3 million in its debut.

The worst fashion moments of 2014

Last week's first- and second-place films, Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 1, fell to Nos. 4 and 5 as a result, earning $8 million and $7.7 million, respectively.

After opening wide, Wild jumped from 10th place to No. 6 with $4.1 million. At No. 7 was Top Five with $3.57 million, which slightly topped Big Hero 6's $3.56 million and Penguins of Madagascar's $3.52 million.

The Bollywood comedy P.K.had a surprisingly strong debut, coming in at No. 10 with $3.4 million.
