Box Office: Guardians of the Galaxy Is Summer’s Highest-Grossing Film

Guardians of the Galaxy soared to new heights at the box office this weekend, reclaiming the No. 1 spot in its fourth week in theaters with $17.6 million in ticket sales, and surpassing Transformers: Age of Extinction to become the highest-grossing film of the summer, Box Office Mojo reports.

After being overtaken by Guardians, Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—which spent its first two weeks at No. 1—dropped to second place in its third week, with $16.8 million.

Tearjerker If I Stay had a solid opening, landing at No. 3 with $16.3 million. It was followed by the No. 4 Let's Be Cops, which took in $11 million.

The high school football drama When the Game Stands Tall also enjoyed a decent debut, finishing in fifth place with $9 million.

The Giver fell a spot to No. 6, earning $6.7 million in its second week. That was enough to edge out The Expendables 3, which ended up at No. 7 with $6.6 million.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For bombed in its debut, finishing in eighth place with an anemic $6.48 million. That's a 78 percent drop from the opening of the original Sin City, and marks one of the lowest debuts ever for director Robert Rodriguez.

Rounding out the Top 10 were The Hundred-Foot Journey (No. 9, $5.6 million) and Into the Storm (No. 10, $3.8 million).
