Box Office: Catching Fire Breaks Records, Vince Vaughn's Latest Opens Soft

Never underestimate the power of Katniss Everdeen.

The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire certainly lived up to its name this weekend, shattering a November record at the box office with an estimated $161.1 million in earnings. Not only is that about $10 million more than the original Hunger Games made in its opening weekend in 2012, but would also make Catching Fire the fourth-highest opening weekend ever, and the top grossing debut for a 2D-only movie, Box Office Mojo reports.

Fall TV Report Card: How are the new shows doing?

Landing in second place, and ending its two-week reign at No. 1, was Thor: The Dark World with $14.1 million. The Best Man Holiday also dropped a spot to No. 3 with $12.5 million.

The Vince Vaughn comedy Delivery Man debuted at No. 4 with $8.2 million, followed by Free Birds with $5.3 million.

Last Vegas came in sixth place with $4.4 million, and Bad Grandpa earned $3.5 million for a seventh-place finish.

In its eighth week in theaters, Gravity held strong in eighth place with $3.3 million, while 12 Years a Slave dropped a spot to No. 9 with $2.8 million.

And, after opening wide this weekend, Dallas Buyers Club edged into the Top 10 with $2.8 million.
