Boston Bombing Suspect Says He Was Motivated By U.S. Wars, Officials Say

Suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev claims that he and his brother, second alleged bomber Tamerlan Tsanaev, were motivated by the United States' recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, The Washington Post reports.

Officials close to the situation told the newspaper that Dzhokhar, 19, has confessed to the crime, and has claimed that he and his brother acted independently when they planned the April 15 attack at the Boston Marathon, which killed three and injured more than 200. The official told the newspaper that they were likely not instructed by a major national terrorist organization.

The younger Tsarnaev, who was captured April 18 in Boston, has provided limited information on the attack, according to sources. He has already attributed his brother to being the "mastermind" behind the bombings.

Dzhokhar, who is now listed as in fair condition, remains hospitalized at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He was formally charged on Monday with one count of using and conspiring to use an improvised explosive device resulting in death and one count of malicious destruction of property by means of an explosive device resulting in death.
