Billy Bush, NBC Reach Agreement on Today Departure

It's official: Billy Bush has been let go from Today following the release of the infamous tape that became the latest Donald Trump scandal.

In a memo sent to the Today staff, Today senior vice president Noah Oppenheim relayed the news that Bush would be leaving the program effective immediately.

"Billy Bush will be leaving the TODAY show's 9am hour, effective today," the note read. "While he was a new member of the Today team, he was a valued colleague and longtime member of the broader NBC family. We wish him success as he goes forward."

Bush also released a statement. "I am deeply grateful for the conversations I've had with my daughters, and for all of the support from family, friends and colleagues," he said. "I look forward to what lies ahead."

Matt Lauer briefly addressed Bush's departure at the top of Tuesday's Today. "Of course, all of us here at Today wish Billy the very best," he said.

Bush found himself on the wrong side of the news when an Access Hollywood audio tape from 2005 of him and Republican presidential nominee Trump talking lewdly was released almost two weeks ago, embroiling Trump in one of the most infamous scandals of this scandal-filled presidential race. In the tape, which was sourced from a hot mic during one of Trump's appearances on Access Hollywood, Trump was heard telling Bush that his celebrity status granted him certain privileges with women, bragging about grabbing women by their genitals and commenting on then Access Hollywood co-host Nancy O'Dell. Bush was heard laughing with Trump and egging him on.

Reports of Bush's negotiations with NBC to leave the show came up shortly after, with Today officially suspending Bush just over a week ago. The terms of Bush's departure were not disclosed.

Bush and Trump have both since apologized for their behavior on the tape.
