BIG 'BOTS

Walking, talking machines were all the rage at the weekend box office. Family-friendly 'toon Robots opened at No. 1 with a solid $36.5 million, pushing Vin Diesel's manbot satire The Pacifier into second place with $18.1 million. Among other debuts, Bruce Willis' thriller Hostage grabbed the No. 4 spot with a weak $9.8 million, while a kinder, gentler The Passion of the Christ got crucified in its re-release, landing outside the Top 20 with just $239,850 in 947 theaters. In contrast, the dark comedy The Upside of Anger earned roughly the same amount despite playing in only nine theaters, confirming my belief that Keri Russell is, in fact, bigger than Jesus Christ.
